Hortobágy National Park was Hungary's first national park and became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999 — unusually, as a cultural landscape rather than pure wilderness, recognising the pastoral traditions that shaped it. Some 800 square kilometres of alkaline grassland, marsh and fishpond stretch to a horizon broken only by the odd sweep-pole well.
It is one of Europe's great birding sites: over 340 recorded species, and an autumn crane migration that can put 100,000 birds in the sky at once. Grey cattle, Racka sheep with their corkscrew horns, water buffalo and Nonius horses are still herded here by csikós in traditional blue, and the Nine-arch Bridge from 1833 is the park's postcard image.
