April 4, 2021

Szeged is a city in the south part of Hungary, located on the banks of Tisza River. This is the third largest city in the country, very interesting from a tourist point of view: interesting sights and architectural monuments, history and culture, as well as a special cozy atmosphere.

Szeged is known as the “City of Sunshine, ” because it has the highest number of sunny days in Hungary.

The city centre of Szeged is a lovely place to walk around, with open spaces and wide, pedestrianised streets lined with Neoclassical and Art Nouveau style buildings.

95% of Szeged’s buildings were destroyed by floods in 1879. Then the city got rebuilt. All the new buildings have formed into a single ensemble in the Art Nouveau style. This architectural trend is distinguished by it’s sophistication and originality of forms.

One of the largest organs is located here. It is also called the Votive Church. The tower of St. Demeter used to be the bell tower of an ancient cathedral from the 13th century, which was restored in the form of a tower after the floods in the 19th century.

Votive Church of Szeged - the "Szeged Dom," or cathedral

Dom Square is one of the largest squares of Hungary at over 12,000 square metres in size. The square includes the “Szeged Dom,” or cathedral, as well as the buildings of University of Szeged.

The synagogue of Szeged is one of the most beautiful synagogues in the world. It was built in 1902. The building’s architecture is a harmonious combination of Arabic and Mediterranean style. The synagogue is decorated with cornices, arches and bas-reliefs. The interior of the temple is not less refined, paintings and ornaments prevail inside . The stained glass windows are made of Venetian glass. The altar, made of marble, white gold and other precious metals, looks very impressive and majestic.

Relaxing and historic
The Anna Thermal baths are situated in a beautiful building in the heart of the city. The medicinal water of the Anna Thermal baths contains alkali-hydrogen-carbonic which may sound way too chemical, but in fact it is really effective in treating rheumatism or joint problems. There are a variety of saunas, including hot Finnish ones, a hot and a cooler steam room. As well as pools at different temperatures, many with hydrotherapy jets. The hottest at 36 C is a medicinal pool. The bath has a swimming pool, a buffer and an internal garden for sunbathing. The interior spaces are elegant and well maintained, combining Arte Nouveau and neo-classical styles. Don’t miss out on this beautiful experience!
