Szeged is a vibrant city in southern Hungary, located on the banks of the Tisza River. As the third-largest city in the country, Szeged captivates visitors with its fascinating architectural monuments, rich history and culture, and a uniquely welcoming atmosphere.

Known as the “City of Sunshine,” Szeged enjoys more sunny days than any other city in Hungary, making it an ideal destination year-round.

The city center is a delight to explore, featuring open spaces and wide, pedestrianized streets lined with stunning Neoclassical and Art Nouveau buildings.

After devastating floods destroyed 95% of Szeged’s buildings in 1879, the city was meticulously rebuilt. The reconstruction created a harmonious ensemble of Art Nouveau architecture, distinguished by its sophistication and originality of forms.

Votive Church and Dóm Square

The magnificent cathedral was built of red brick in an eclectic style, blending Romanesque, Gothic, and Byzantine motifs. As the fourth-largest church in Hungary, it houses one of the country’s largest organs. The tower of St. Demeter, originally the bell tower of a 13th-century cathedral, was restored as a tower following the 19th-century floods.

Votive Church of Szeged - the majestic Szeged Cathedral

Dóm Square is one of Hungary’s largest squares, spanning over 12,000 square meters. The square encompasses the Szeged Cathedral as well as the University of Szeged buildings.

Szeged Synagogue

The Szeged Synagogue ranks among the world’s most beautiful synagogues. Built in 1902, the building showcases a harmonious blend of Arabic and Mediterranean architectural styles. Adorned with cornices, arches, and bas-reliefs, the synagogue’s interior is equally refined, featuring exquisite paintings and ornaments. The stained glass windows are crafted from Venetian glass, while the altar—made of marble, white gold, and other precious metals—creates an impressive and majestic focal point.

Anna Thermal Baths: Relaxation and History Combined

The Anna Thermal Baths occupy a beautiful building in the heart of the city. The medicinal waters contain alkali-hydrogen-carbonate, which sounds technical but is highly effective for treating rheumatism and joint problems.

Facilities include a variety of saunas—hot Finnish saunas, and both hot and cool steam rooms—as well as pools at different temperatures, many featuring hydrotherapy jets. The hottest pool, maintained at 36°C, is specifically designed for medicinal purposes. The complex also offers a swimming pool, a buffer pool, and an internal garden for sunbathing.

The interior spaces are elegantly maintained, combining Art Nouveau and neo-classical styles. This is an experience you won’t want to miss!
