Buda Castle: Budapest’s Crown Jewel
Buda Castle is one of the main symbols of Budapest and a must-see for anyone visiting the Hungarian capital. This magnificent complex offers visitors insight into Hungary’s former greatness, stunning architectural beauty, and rich historical identity.
The Buda Castle and the surrounding Castle District are located on a hill above the Danube in the heart of Budapest, stretching approximately 2 kilometers in length.
The history of Buda Castle began in 1255, when King Béla IV decided to build a fortress on Castle Hill following the Mongol invasion. Throughout its tumultuous history, the castle has been destroyed and rebuilt many times, yet it has always risen from the ashes. Hungarian kings built their palaces here, and the nobility constructed their finest residences. Today, the entire Castle District comprises several significant sights and offers breathtaking panoramic views of both Buda and Pest.
Main Attractions of the Castle District
- The Royal Palace – Houses the Hungarian National Gallery and Budapest History Museum
- Fisherman’s Bastion – Iconic neo-Gothic terrace with stunning views
- Matthias Church – One of Hungary’s most significant churches
- Holy Trinity Square (Szentháromság tér) – The main square featuring historical buildings and memorials
Address: 1014 Budapest, Szent György tér 2

The Royal Palace houses several museums including the Hungarian National Gallery (mng.hu), the Budapest History Museum (btm.hu), and the National Library of Hungary. While these museums charge admission, walking through the Castle District itself is free.
