Our private Villány Wine Tour takes you door-to-door from your Budapest hotel to the cellars of three of the region’s most celebrated estates: Jammertal (JBB), Sauska and Gere Attila. The Journey South: Budapest to Villány

Villány sits at Hungary’s southern edge, roughly 2.5 hours by car from Budapest. We recommend a relaxed morning departure — most guests leave the city around 9:00–10:00 — arriving in the wine country in good time for a late-morning tasting and an unhurried lunch. Your private driver handles every kilometre, so you’re free to sit back, enjoy the countryside, and taste freely without a thought for the road home.

Villány: Hungary’s Premier Red Wine Region

Villány is Hungary’s warmest and southernmost wine region, blessed with a near-Mediterranean microclimate and limestone-rich soils that ripen bold, structured reds. It is above all the home of Cabernet Franc — so distinctive here that the local expression has earned its own protected name, Villányi Franc — alongside world-class Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and traditional Bordeaux-style blends. This is a region where old-world heritage and modern ambition sit side by side.

Three Estates, One Unforgettable Day

Jammertal (JBB) — Ambition in a Glass

A high-end boutique estate specialising in ambitious Bordeaux varieties and flagship reds built for long ageing. Jammertal’s wines have been decorated internationally — Robert Parker scores in the low 90s, Gold at AWC Vienna, and, most recently, a Grand Gold Medal for the Koh-I-Noor Merlot 2018 at the 2026 Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, where it was named an International Red Wine Revelation. A visit here is intimate and personal: the JBB Privilege tasting is hosted in the estate’s atmospheric brick-vaulted cellar, often opening with a chilled glass of sparkling on arrival. (Please note the winery has limited English; we can arrange a translator on request.)

Sauska — Modern Elegance & Gastronomy

Sauska brings a strikingly modern sensibility to Villány: sleek architecture, precise, food-friendly wines, and one of Hungary’s finest winery restaurants. Their signature Sauska 360 Experience pairs a five-course tasting menu with a private sommelier, a six-wine signature flight and a cellar tour — a genuinely world-class gastronomic afternoon. Prefer something a touch lighter? The five-course CHEF menu with wine pairing, or a glass of Sauska sparkling on the terrace, are equally memorable.

A taste of a recent Sauska five-course menu, each course paired with an estate wine:

  • Welcome — Sauska Brut Magnum or Verjus Fizz
  • Duck liver terrine — apple compote, walnut cream, salted caramel, brioche (Tokaj Late Harvest)
  • Pike-perch — grilled marrow squash, chard kimchi, dill (Birs Chardonnay)
  • Cabbage pasta — tomato-butter sauce, kapia pepper, chili (Pinot Noir)
  • Lamb tenderloin — roasted carrot, red-wine onion, black-cherry jus (Makár Villányi Franc)
  • Lemon cheesecake — white chocolate, cookie crumble, raspberry sorbet (Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos)

Gere Attila — A Family Legacy Since 1991

One of the defining names of Villány, the Gere Attila winery is a family enterprise founded in 1991, farming some 70 hectares of prime vineyard across the region’s finest slopes. Concentrated, oak-aged reds such as Kopar, Solus Merlot and Cabernet Franc have real ageing potential and international recognition. The estate is also home to the four-star Gere Crocus Wine Hotel and the excellent Mandula restaurant — the natural setting for a relaxed à-la-carte lunch between tastings.

A taste of the à-la-carte menu at Mandula:

  • Duck liver pâté, red-wine summer berries, steamed bread dumpling
  • Beef tartare, fresh and pickled vegetables, sourdough toast
  • Red-wine braised lamb, truffle mashed potatoes, roasted summer vegetables
  • Duck breast, poppy-seed bread pudding with tonka bean, red-wine sour cherries
  • Dry-aged ribeye steak, rosemary herb butter, stifolder beans
  • Dark chocolate, “the balsamic vinegar forgotten for 20 years”

Choose Your Experience

  • Classic — a private guided wine tasting paired with a relaxed à-la-carte lunch at Gere’s Mandula restaurant, opened with a sparkling welcome. The perfect first taste of Villány.
  • Gourmet — your tasting followed by Sauska’s five-course CHEF menu with wine pairing: a refined, chef-led lunch built around the estate’s wines.
  • Premium — the full Sauska 360: a five-course tasting menu, a six-wine signature flight, a cellar tour and a private sommelier. Villány at its most indulgent.
